With its initiative “Frosch protects Frogs” Werner & Mertz has continued the long-term co-operation with the German NABU (a nature protection union) on a regional basis. The Rheinaue wetlands are located directly in front of our factory premises in Mainz, extending as far as Bingen. This landscape is characterised by the Rhine River and its high waters, and many rare animals and plants find their habitat here. Until the 1980s the tree frog was regularly seen here, but today it is hardly seen in this area. The destruction of its habitat - shallow pools in the meadows and wild bushes - makes it a rare guest.

With the initiative ”Frosch protects Frogs“ NABU supports the renaturation of the Rheinaue wetlands between Mainz and Bingen. The NABU Nature Protection Centre Rheinaue Wetlands provides optimum possibilities to support the nature of the Rheinaue wetlands.

Large scale public relation campaigns promote greater sympathy for the tree frog and the like. In annual exhibitions the habitat of the tree frog and other amphibians is presented to children and teenagers in exciting stories. Many groups take part in excursions and guided tours through the Rheinaue wetlands, during which they learn what kind of habitat the tree frog needs and what we can do to make it return to our area.

The tree frog stands for a whole biocoenosis which NABU wants to protect. Rare plants like the iris and marsh marigold, birds such as the white stork and lapwing need a near-natural floodplain just like the tree frog. Safeguarding biodiverse meadows and creating waters will help restore ideal living conditions for the tree frog. Appropriate care measures help preserve these habitats. The NABU Nature Protection Centre Rheinaue Wetlands organizes courses and meetings about the tree frog and the Rheinaue wetlands on a regular basis. Dedicated nature lovers can participate in one of various work groups to actively support the protection of the tree frog and its habitat. Regular guided tours and events for children and adults show that the Rheinaue wetlands between Mainz and Bingen are a suitable place for man and nature.
